Minoki - August 2005 Canine Angel of the Month

On August 11, Minoki will celebrate her 14th birthday, this in itself, is pretty incredible. However, the thing that makes the celebration truly great is that we share this birthday together. Yes, that’s right; August 11 is my birthday too! This is just one of the many gifts and experiences we have shared together over nearly 14 years. This year is even more monumental, as Minoki was diagnosed with renal failure on May 1, and was given only two weeks to live. But Heavenly Father has given us another gift … a little more time together. When Minoki came into my life, she came bounding up to me with “smiles” and kisses from that very first meeting. It was as if she knew who would be taking her home, or maybe it was really her who was choosing me. Either way, it was my great gain and came at a time when I needed to share love and be loved the most. When Minoki was just 3 months old, a very wise woman told me that Minoki would teach me far more than I could ever teach her, and it’s true. Even now, while she is ill, she teaches me and everyone around her the importance of love and kindness to all. Even people who proclaim not to be ‘dog people’ are drawn to Minoki. The two of us have traveled everywhere together, shared many adventures and are each other’s best friend. Minoki is a true gift from Heaven, and I hope I can learn to show the same grace, dignity and kindness in my life, that she shows in hers.
